The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Edmund was easily won over to the side of darkness in "The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe." Take note of the wicked white witch's strategy (interesting, she's colored white!). She simply seduced Edward by appealing to his love for rich sweet foods, for status, and for revenge. The more Edmund got those, the more he craved for more! So strong was his delights that in the end he betrayed his brother and sisters.

How addictive the appetites of the world and the flesh can be. Sex. Food. Money. Power. Alcohol. Clothes. They're the devil's favorite and most successful weapons to destroy God's people. He always appeal to our love for what satisfies our selfish and sinful desires in order to discourage or defeat us. Even at the expense of loved ones, friends, and even our relationship with God.

Three Scriptures come to mind to resist the devil's deceiving temptations. They are:

"Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill its lusts" (Galatians 5: 16)

"Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts" (Romans 13:14).

"Do not love the world or the things in the world" (1 John 2: 15).

Of course, if you turn to Ephesians 6, God provides us with a spiritual armor to fight the war against the devil, the flesh, and the world.

Only things is ... we must put it on.

50% of Regular Church-Goers Are Not Born Again!

This fact is startling. The numbers are huge. The problem is urgent.

Half of people who attend U.S. churches do not have a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
I read this recently from noted U.S. researcher George Barna (www.barna.org). Barna says the problem is further fueled by “spiritual anarchy” and “biblical illiteracy” within our churches.

“Church-going nonbelievers.” They should not be confused with “seekers.” “Church-going non-believers" are people who are regulars in the congregation. They attend often, even faithfully. Maybe they’ve grown up in the church. Many are serving in the leadership. They’ve heard the Gospel – again and again.

It’s difficult to imagine that people we know and love might not be born again. We want to think the best about our church and the people in it.

That’s why I find the research of Barna so startling. It is not consistent with how we ordinarily perceive the spiritual health of our church. And while some churches are healthier than others, the research clearly demonstrates the need for bold steps to reach to people right in our own pews!
